BREAKING GROUND 2019
GERMISTON KNOWLEDGE CENTRE
Studio Sixteen is excited and honoured to have recently been awarded the contract for the concept design and interiors for the Germiston Knowledge Centre, in collaboration with Turnkey Interiors for the City of Ekurhuleni. This state of the art library, exhibition area and Planetarium will be housed in an iconic modern structure designed by IDC Architects. Watch this space for further updates on the project.
Germiston, Johannesburg, RSA
Conceptualise a design for the interior of the Knowledge Centre facility as a first class, state of the art City Library, comparable with the best modern libraries in the world.
The building includes 7 stories of library space, a coffee shop, planetarium, gift shop, art exhibition spaces, a planning house, meeting rooms and auditoriums.
OUR UNIQUE DESIGN SOLUTION
Our aim was to create a uniquely South African space that unites people of all backgrounds, encourages collaboration, where ideas and stories are shared, and where knowledge is accessible to all. Maintaining successful navigation of the library and practical use of space for ideal accessibility was paramount, whilst allowing for a design concept that excites and breaks traditional perceptions that libraries are “boring”. The use of durable and acoustic materials combats large-volume foot traffic whilst designated spaces allow for conversation, and others allow for quiet.
Inspired by the African weaver bird and the organic nature of the architectural structure, as well as contemporary African artists, designers and photographers, S16’s concept included vibrant collections of woven and afrocentric elements, patterns and details, injecting a local, eclectic, aspirational and proudly South African element to the design. Above answering the brief we created a new logo concept, exciting uniforms for the staff and introduction of a unique library app to successfully navigate the space.
